Evelyn Arevalo Lang Arts Per ¾ 12/12/17 Google & Human Intelligence Without Google and its various sources we wouldn't be able to dig deeper into our findings. We use google to research any topic we want to learn more about and we gain more information in that specific topic. Google is not making us less intelligent because it allows us to freely research, find new new ideas, and it gives us unlimited source options. To begin with, Google allows us to freely research. In source C: A study of students Online research Behavior by Moran and Firth, it states “ We found ways to memorize what we needed to know by leveraging our visual memory, being genuinely interested in the information, creating associations and more.” This statement proves that we can search up anything we want and would be able to memorize it because it caught our attention. If we were to search up anything on Google, we would be able to learn new things everyday and would have that information memorized. In source A, it clarifies, “ Access to the Internet’s information lets us think better and faster”. This proves that by being able to surf through the Internet we could let the new information sink in our minds Furthermore, google gives us new ideas. In source A, it agrees, “ By considering a wide range of information, we can arrive at more creative and informed solutions”. This quote means that we get even more new ideas if we have a wide range of resources to help get new ideas even we couldnt have thought about. With the new variety of ideas we could use them to do projects, papers, or homework. In source A, it states, “ Internet users are more likely to be exposed to a diversity of ideas”. This claim proves that people that use the Internet are more likely to get a whole new of ideas. The Internet has new things everyday that are being updated every few minutes, there are many ideas for you to use. In general, google gives us unlimited source options. In source C, it claims, “ Without Internet access, if we wanted to know about something, we had limited source options to research”. This statement proves that without the Internet access we would only have limited sources to help us with our homework, projects, papers etc. In source A it claims, “ I could hunt through those or turn to Google, which returns 45,000 pages”. This proves that even though we may have some sources in our nearby library, Google will give 3 times the sources you already have. Although Google has all of theses great pros, there are some cons. In source C, it clarifies, “ With the Internet, everything is just a click away. When we don't know something, we are primed to turn to the computer to rectify the situation”. This statement shows that we have problems of our own, we intend to always rely on the Internet for help. We should be able to do somethings of our own without depending on our computer. In conclusion, I disagree that Google is making you less intelligent. In the contrary it make you learn new things everyday. Google has an impact in our society and in the world. We use google because it has a variety of sources that can help us with any school work or other kinds of errands. We could even surf the Internet for fun. I believe people should agree with my claim because Google is a positive way to learn new things. People use Google for everything even if they don't know it.
Evelyn Arevalo Per ¾ ELA 12/18/17 Freedoms Essay Freedom of assembly is where people get together and protest their beliefs. Although if the freedom of assembly is being abused, should they still be allowed to assembly. Should the white supremacist be allowed to assembly after they caused injuries and violence. For example, the white supremacist are using their freedom of assembly. In an article by “Fox 5” it states “ Law enforcement’s response to a violent white nationalist rally in Virginia last summer failed on multiple fonts, leading to “deep distrust of government”, in the Charlottesville community.” Although the white nationalists were being violent, they still have the right to protest without being punished by the government. Another statement being found on the “Washington Post”, it states “ Most dangerously, law enforcement expert say, officers initially deployed without adequate protective gear to break up the fight and use not well positioned to keep the peace”. This statement shows how the police got involved and were not using peaceful manners in order to break up the fight that was going on. Even though the white supremacists were using their freedom of assembly, they get too violent which caused some injuries and a couple of deaths. The white nationalist who killed the people on the opposing side were being sentence towards murder, which was fair on my point of view. The white nationalist didn't have to abuse their freedom of assemble. My second example is that the white supremacists should peacefully protest their beliefs in a matter where they do not start any violence. In and article by “ USA Today”, it states, “ A flawed enforcement plan failed to maintain order and prevent injuries and death at a white nationalists rally in Charlottesville in August that erupted in violence”. Many nationalists wanted to protest peacefully, but ended up turning into chaos. Another statement is show in and article by “USA Today”, “This represents a failure of one of governments core functions - the protections of fundamental rights”. This shows how white nationalists are abusing their freedom of assembly and are not doing it peacefully. They should protest in a way where they don't cause any harm in others and don't start violence. In the other hand, they do have the right to protest their beliefs. The third example is that they shouldn't start a fight in the middle of a public store or location. In and article by “ USA Today”, it states “ Charlottesville police didn't ensure separation between counter protesters and so called alt right protesters upset with the city council’s decisions to remove the Robert E. Lee statue from Emancipation Park”. The white nationalist were upset with the whole statue thing which lead… “ Neo- Nazis, white nationalist and Ku Klux Klan members who depend on Charlottesville in part to protest plans to remove a state of confederate General Robert E. Lee began fighting in the streets with counter demonstrates before to event and officially began”. This shows how the white nationalists began a fight which lead to chaos. Even though they were protesting in a fight, they got together to ally against the opposing to protest in beliefs in that statute. In Conclusion, even though the white supremacist did a protest, they caused violence which lead to major chaos. In my opinion the white nationalists could have protest peaceful. There can be conflicts when in a situation that can soon lead to chaos.
Adan Franco Andrea Morales Diego Baustia Christian Duran Evelyn Arevalo Junk Food Essay Our modern generation has been hit with a craze of junk food and this is not only affecting us but generations to come. The children of today are suffering from this junk food. For the first time since the Great Depression kids are projected to have a shorter lifespan than their parents. A factor that plays a key role in this is selling junk food at school. In order to end this problematic situation we must attack this problem of junk food were it starts (school). According to New York Times and Norton center School in America should eradicate junk food because it causes health issues, leads to obesity, and creates financial issues. To begin with, junk food can lead to difficult health consequences such as heart disease or develop diabetes. According to source c, it mentions, “70% of obese children have at least one risk factor for heart disease”. This relates to us because it could cause us health difficulties. Higher levels of other diseases and other health problems. Some ways to change that are for example replacing the junk food for more nutritious food. There would be a lower level of obese problem and help the people be more healthy. Some people would disagree with having snack bars in school, because it would be obese. Not only that but also “⅓ of kids born after 2000 will develop diabetes”. To add on, junk food being unhealthy it also leads to obesity. Sixty million adults (20% of the population) According to Source a it states, “Nearly 300,000 people die each year from complications associated with being obese or overweight.” This means that nearly 300,000 die each year because they are overweight or obese. If we keep going at this rate more people will die and the obesity population will increase. According to Source C, it explains, “43% of the U.S. population will be obese by 2018.” This means that nearly half of the U.S. will be obese by 2018. This is a problem because you will have more expenses for medical bills. Many people would disagree saying the school lunch is worse than what they are selling. According to Source A, it states, “What about fried chicken fingers, cheeseburgers, and pizza-foods many school cafeterias serve?” What they are saying is, what about the school lunch, isn’t that unhealthy? Obesity may be a problem on junk food but what about the financial issues? Last but not least, junk food creates financial issues. It states that in source C that, “by 2018 the U.S. will spend $344,000,000,000 on obesity related health care causes”. This is equivalent to the cost of 13,835,959.4 years of college education. This means we are spending more money on obesity healthcare causes, than going to college. To add on to this, obesity treatment is a very expensive costs. According to Source C, it states that, “Children treated for obesity are 300% more expensive for our healthcare system than kids of a healthy weight.” This means that we are wasting money on treatment, but instead we can prevent it by staying healthy. While many others argue that schools should not stop selling junk food because some students don't eat school lunch and will just buy snacks from the snack bar, and the majority of those students are healthy. In conclusion, we need to stop wasting money on treatments and stay healthy if we stay healthy we save money. In Conclusion, junk food should be banned from schools because it is unhealthy, leads to obesity, and can be cause financial issues. This can cause a conflict in our society and the world. A conflict can occur because soon half of our population will be obese or overweight. We should put a stop to this before the population of obesity increases.
Evelyn Arevalo 5/9/18 DWA Many NFL players started to take a knee after football player Colin Kaepernick took a knee on August 26, 2016. Many people felt that Kaepernick was being disrespectful towards the United States flag. In my opinion though, no it is not disrespectful for NFL to take a knee during the national anthem because they are showing pride in their race, expressing themselves peacefully, and have the right to protest in what they believe. My first reason is showing pride in their race. In source A, Colin Kaepernick stats, “ I’m not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color”. Kaepernick's quote means that he is not going to stand up for the national anthem, where he is facing a flag that disapproves black people and people of other colors. Kaepernick was not showing any disrespect because he was being ethical towards his beliefs. In source A, the author claims, “ The 2017 NFL pre-season began with black players from Seattle Sea hawks, Oakland raiders in Philadelphia Eagles kneeling or sitting during the anthem with support of the white teammates.” This quote shows that they are being influenced by what one person did and following him. This shows pride and contribution towards what they think is right. Following through, NFL players are expressing themselves peacefully. In Source A, proves that they are doing peaceful actions. “On August 21, 2017, 12 players shoulders in diversity.” NFL players were on their knees praying peacefully showing no harm whatsoever.” They took a knee and started to pray to what felt right to them. In source A, it clarifies, “We are not trying to be disrespectful to the United States flag or be a distraction on the team but as men we have a right to stand up and believe in.” Jabrill Peppers made this statement showing and demonstrating to what the right for them and his fellow teammates. He was not showing any disrespect to anybody. He just stood up and believed what he believed. In general, NFL players have the right to protest of what they believe was wrong. In source A, the article shows “Not standing for the national anthem is legal for protests.Peaceful protests because it is the first Amendment.” This quote stands for that NFL players have a right to flipping protest. Nothing can take away their rights from doing some. In Source B, it forbids Congress from doing so. In Source B, it states, “It guarantees freedom of expression by prohibiting Congress from restricting the press or the rights of individuals.” This quote shows that COngress cannot do anything to the NFL players who take a knee because they are using their freedom of protest and speech. ALthough the NFL players do have the right to express themselves, there are cons about this situation. In source A, a statement made by Carule is hem, states, “ It justs blows my mind that somebody like Kaepernick will do what he does to dishonor the flag of this country and the national anthem while we have young men and women overseas fighting for this country that is now.” This statement shows that this country has became a country that is today. People should honor it, show some respect, and show how this country became awesome. In conclusion, not standing up for the national anthem is not disrespectful because you are showing pride in your race expressing yourself, and have the right to protest in what they believe in. NFL players have their own ethical beliefs and want to contribute to themselves and their community. They should believe in what correlated use their right.
